Can a business with a very complicated production and fulfilment process use ecommerce effectively, smoothly and profitably? Yes it can, it just takes proper planning and understanding!
What we did
The team at Crush Licensing asked us to consult and advise on how to develop a fully functional ecommerce presence for 55Max, the well know photographic and bespoke printing boutique.
We could tell almost immediately that the hands on nature of the 55Max business process together with implicit production knowledge meant that this project was going to take a lot of thought before any web development took place.
Phase one
We instructed Crush that they should begin immediately with initial concept work for the homepage. This would enable us to lock down the new Internet branding quite soon and give us a base framework within which we could then develop the information architecture for the site.
At the same time, we began producing process documentation and initial wireframes in order for us to ensure that that we had a full understanding of the sale-to-delivery chain.
Phase two
With NVisage now involved on the ecommerce development side, the site design and templating process began in earnest.
We deemed it prudent to produce a visual template for each product line for the client to sign-off. This totalled over 40 in all, although in truth, only about ten specific templates would be used in the site itself.
The templates allowed us to demonstrate each core element of the user buying process, from printing and sizing options through to currency and metric/imperial changes.
The templating process was completed in March 2007.
Phase three
NVisage were now training the 55Max team on populating and managing the new ecommerce website following in our supplementary brief covering website assets, image sizes and additional content guidelines.
Given the very large archive of assets to be transferred across, this phase took well over two months to complete with testing of the new website began in May 2007.
